About the Colic

Colic is the first enemy of the horse. This disease appears usually as the pain comes from the abdomen. The colic restlessness can change from the slight to the severe one but never should be treated as a routine. In many cases the colic restlessness can get worse to a life threatening state within a short time. That is why a lot depends on an early detection of the symptoms and an effective, professional medical help by the veterinarian.

The horse owners most important task is the early detection of colic. It is not an easy thing in the slight cases. This time we would like to help the owners with listing the most frequent and relatively typical symptoms.

The horse watching at the abdomen with turned back neck
Kicking and biting the abdomen
Stretching as passing urine but still not
Repeated lying downs and quick stand ups
Rolling over especially if the colic is severe
Doglike sitting or lying on back
No appetite
Touching the mouth to the water without drinking
Reduced intestine movements, small amount of faeces or its total lack
Increased or decreased intestine sounds or their total lack
Higher breathing rate, dilated nozzles
Higher pulse rate
Cold limbs

In the successful treatment of colic time-saving is of important. Sometimes the colic restlessness disappears without any intervention but in most cases the quick veterinary help or life saving operation is vital. When the owner notices his horses in colic the next steps are suggested:

1. All the feed must be taken away from the horse

2. Call the vet

3. Inform the vet about

Pulse rate / minute
Breathing rate / minute
Rectal temperature
The colour of the mucous membrane
Capillary Refill Time
The behaviour of the horse / kicks, scratches, lies, rolls over etc./
Intestine sounds their existence or absence
Any changes in feeding, place, work
General clinical history, former colic restlessness or medication
Last date of vaccination and deworming
Breeding status or pregnancy

4. Provide the most comfortable environment for the horse /it may lie down if it does not want to roll over and there is no danger of an injury/.

5. If the horse is rolling over and violent, a slow walk is recommended- if it is possible.

6. The owner must not give any medicine to the animal unless the vet orders it. The medicine may cover the symptoms so the right diagnoses and the life of the animal is endangered.
